Safe crane scale use comes down to five rules: check the hook and shackle before every lift, never exceed the marked capacity, keep people out from under the load, lift smoothly and let the load settle before reading, and take the scale out of service after any overload or impact. This procedure turns those rules into a routine your team can follow without slowing the job down.

A hanging scale is not just an instrument — while the load is in the air, it is a structural link in your lifting chain. Treat it with the same discipline you give a shackle or a sling, because a failure at the scale drops the entire load. HSE guidance on lifting equipment applies in full, and this article translates it into the specific context of suspended weighing.

Before the first lift of the day: the two-minute pre-use check

HSE expects operators to check lifting accessories before use; manufacturer manuals for crane scales say the same. Build this into the start of shift:

  1. Top shackle and hook. Look for distortion — bends, twists, opening of the hook throat — plus nicks, gouges, cracks and corrosion. Thread damage on shackle pins matters as much as the hook itself.
  2. Safety catch. The spring-loaded latch must snap shut on its own. A hook without a working catch can gap under a swinging load.
  3. Housing. Cracks or deep dents in the body can hide load-cell damage. Surface scuffs are normal in a yard; structural deformation is not.
  4. Display and battery. Power on, confirm the display zeroes with nothing attached. A flat battery mid-lift means a stranded load while someone finds the charger.

Anything fails: quarantine the scale, tag it, and report it. Do not “just do one lift” with a cracked hook.

Rigging the scale correctly

Hang the scale so the load path runs straight through it. The scale’s own shackle goes to the crane or hoist hook; the load’s sling or chain goes to the scale’s lower hook, seated fully in the bowl of the hook, never on the tip. Check three things before tension comes on:

  • Alignment. Scale, hook and load centre of gravity in one vertical line. Side-loading a scale bends readings and, worse, bends hooks.
  • Accessory ratings. Every sling, shackle and eyebolt in the chain must carry a working load limit equal to or greater than the load — not just the scale’s capacity. Our lifting calculator gives you WLL per sling leg at different angles if you are rigging with multi-leg slings.
  • Free hang. The load must lift clear without snagging. A snagged load that suddenly frees itself shock-loads the scale far beyond the static weight.

During the lift: people, motion, reading

Exclusion zone first. Nobody stands under or beside a suspended load — that includes leaning in to read the display. This is exactly why a bright LED readout matters in specification choices: our 3-tonne industrial hanging scale uses 30 mm digits readable from a sensible distance, and the remote control means the operator can zero, tare and hold without approaching the load. Position yourself where you can see both the display and the load path.

Lift smoothly. Raise the load a few inches and pause. This confirms the rigging is seated, the centre of gravity is where you thought, and there is little harm if anything slips at this height. Then continue to a convenient reading height — there is no accuracy benefit to lifting higher than you need.

Let it settle. A swinging or rotating load reads wrong; the scale sees tension, and a moving load adds dynamic force to true weight. Wait for the sway to damp out, or steady the load with a tag line — never with hands on the load. Use the hold function to freeze the settled reading so you can record it after setting the load down. Overload: the rule that has no exceptions

The marked capacity — 3,000 kg on our scale — is a limit, not a target with margin. Industrial crane scales are built with an ultimate safety factor (4:1 on our model: the structure is designed to withstand four times rated capacity before failure), but that margin exists to absorb accidents, dynamic spikes and material variation. It is not spare capacity for routine use.

Two operational rules follow. First, if you do not know roughly what a load weighs, do not use the scale to find out by trial — estimate from material and dimensions first, and if the estimate approaches capacity, use a bigger scale. Second, after any overload event, impact or drop, take the scale out of service and have it thoroughly examined and recalibrated before it lifts again. Overload protection circuits warn you; they do not repair stressed metal.

Environment and storage

Rated operating range for our model is -10°C to 40°C. Cold thickens battery chemistry and can slow displays; wet weather and load-cell electronics do not mix long-term.
